We keep children safe through prevention, preparation, and protection while preserving the joy and tradition of summer camp.
26 Million children participate in summer camps each year in the United States.*
Yet the industry entrusted with their care operates under inconsistent safety standards, leaving millions of children at risk of preventable incidents.
We use research to build the standards and resources that stop harm before it happens.
Protection
We champion the policies and legislation every child deserves.
Preparation
We equip parents, camps, and communities with the tools to act.
Initiatives
Putting the Safety
of Children First
Research and Resources
We identify the policies and best practices proven to prevent harm and save lives, then equip parents and communities with resources to feel empowered.
Advocacy
The Safe Summers Action Fund is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization committed to driving the legislative change needed to protect campers across America.
Grantmaking
We provide grants through the Safe Summers Fund to help qualified nonprofit summer camps implement new safety standards.
Our vision is a future where children can experience the benefits of summer camp, protected by consistent and transparent safety standards families can trust.
The Safe Summers Foundation was launched by a coalition of parents of the 25 campers and two counselors (“Heaven’s 27”) who lost their lives while in the care of Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas, during the July 4, 2025, flash floods. Our mission is rooted in the hope that such a preventable tragedy never happens to another family.
